Here’s Why Lata Mangeshkar Once Refused To Accept The Prestigious Filmfare Award

The entire nation is still mourning the death of legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar with tributes pouring in from around the world. Indian music icon Lata Mangeshkar died early Sunday (February 6, 2022) at Breech Candy Hospital at the age of 92. Lata Ji had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on January 8 after being diagnosed with COVID-19 and pneumonia.

Lata Mangeshkar has won several accolades for her voice in the Indian music industry during her eight-decade career. Few people know that a legendary singer once refused to receive the Filmfare Award.

During her career spanning over eight decades, Lata Mangeshkar has sung thousands of songs in multiple languages.

The simplicity of Lata Mangeshkar has always stood out. She was always known for her strong morals and ideals, which she upheld throughout her life. Even when she was at the peak of her career, she never compromised her principles so much that she once refused to accept the prestigious Filmfare award.

It was in 1958 when Filmfare nominated Lata Mangeshkar for ‘Best Female Playback Singer’ for her song ‘Aaja Re Pardesi’ from the movie Madhumati. She refused to take the Filmfare as it was the frame of a naked woman.

The organizers then wrapped the dark lady (Filmfare Award) in a cloth and gave it to her.

Mangeshkar’s fame has spread far beyond his native India. The next generation may never see her but we will enjoy her music forever.
