Google Search is updated with the option to enable Dark Mode on desktop. With the addition of Black Mode, users will now have three options in search engine optimization settings from Google.
This will include the option to keep Google’s search view settings in sync with their default computer theme, which will be very helpful if users set a default time to turn on and off black mode.
Black Mode helps to reduce its complexity by maintaining the low level of comparison needed to read it.
The new Google search look settings were announced in a post on the Google Support website. New Appearance Settings has three options – Device Default, Dark, or Light.
The post also clarified that the new Black Mode settings will be released to users on September 9 and will be available gradually to all users in the coming weeks.
How to use black mode in Google Search
Announcement means that new appearance settings will apply to the Google homepage, search results page, search settings, among other connected web pages.
Device default setting automatically matches device color scheme. The black setting shows light text on the background which is dark and in contrast to the Light settings.

- Open Google search by typing google.com into your Web browser.
- In the lower right corner of the Google Search homepage, click Settings.
- Then click on Appearance; in case it does not appear under Settings, click on Search Settings and Appear from the left panel of the page that opens.
- Choose between – Device Default, Black, or Light.
- Below, click Save.
- Google began testing the Black Search feature of Google Search on desktop back in December 2020. Google Mobile Search has been in black mode since May 2020.
