GATE 2022 Exam: Over 23k students demand postponement of exam amid Covid surge

GATE 2022 Exam: The third wave of Covid-19 has gripped the nation, and states have imposed various Covid restrictions to tackle the spike in Covid cases.

During such a period, more than 23,000 students signed a petition on the online portal change.org to postpone the GATE exam following the surge in Covid cases.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) was to be held from February 4 to 13. The result of the exam is expected to be announced on March 17. The exam is conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur.

GATE is an exam that mainly tests the overall understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science for admission to the master’s program and recruitment by certain public sector companies.

Students demanded the exam be postponed with candidate safety in mind, at a time when the highly transmissible variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, has swept the country. Students sign the petition at www.change.org/p/iit-kgp-postpone-gate2022-exam-date-due-to-covid-19-3rd-wave

“With the current 3rd wave, COVID-19 due to its new variant Omicron has spread severely in several states, cities. Several studies including one by IIT Kanpur predict that the peak of 3rd wave is expected to begin in February and that the surge will end by April. Therefore, the peak will most likely coincide with GATE’s regular review dates,” the petition read.

“If exam dates are not rescheduled, candidates appearing for GATE 2022 Exam are at imminent risk of becoming infected and spreading it, thereby endangering their lives and those of their family members,” it added.
