Five electric SUVs unveiled by Mahindra, first launch in 2024

Mahindra has finally unveiled its electrified portfolio after months of tease. The Indian automaker has revealed five electric vehicles, divided into two sub-brands: XUV with Mahindra’s twin peaks emblem in Copper and Born Electric, abbreviated as BE. The SUVs are built on Volkswagen’s modular INGLO platform, which incorporates components from the MEB platform.

Mahindra has introduced the XUV.e8, XUV.e9, BE.05, BE.07, and BE.09 under the two sub-brands. Except for the BE.09, Mahindra plans to launch all of these electric SUVs in India between 2024 and 2026.

All of the electric SUVs have a sleek, concept car-like look. Nothing compares to the design of these five electric vehicles on the road here. The automobiles are built on the INGLO platform, which is modular and can accommodate vehicles of many shapes and sizes. The cabin is large since the electric platform requires fewer components than ICE vehicles and has a flat floor. The instrument panel and infotainment display have been combined into a single panel, and the central tunnel wraps around the driver in a driver-centric design.

Anish Shah, Managing Director & CEO, Mahindra Group, stated of Mahindra’s electric SUV portfolio, “We are happy and delighted to display our Born Electric vision.” It gives a strategic direction that is consistent with our core idea of ‘Rise’ to be a world-class organisation while also rising for our planet in the battle against climate change. Mahindra will provide clients with cutting-edge technology, eye-catching design, world-class products, and the advantages of global alliances.”

Mahindra BE.05

Mahindra has contributed significantly to the development of these electric SUVs. They all employ the same battery pack design and one of two cell architectures, Blade or Prismatic. The battery packs range in size from 60 to 80kWh and are capable of 175kW fast charging, which means a charge from 0 to 80% in less than 30 minutes. The battery management system provides accuracy, safety, range, and longevity.

The electric SUVs come with both rear and all-wheel drive configurations. Depending upon the specifications, the power ranges from 225bhp to 280bhp for the RWD and between 335bhp to 390bhp. Mahindra claims that acceleration from 0 to 100 stands between 5 and 6 seconds which is sports car territory. The range has been optimised by using aerodynamics, reduced rolling resistance, zero-drag wheel bearings and HVAC with minimal power consumption.

Mahindra BE.07

A semi-active suspension manages ride and handling while still providing comfort and sporting character. Then there’s the adjustable brake-by-wire system. Drive modes control numerous features of the vehicle, altering the responsiveness of various components. With a structural cage around the passenger compartment, front with three-load routes, multi-piece dash panel, and superior battery protection via boron steel, safety has been prioritised. The SUVs also have Level 2+ ADAS, which employs 5 radars and other sensors.

On the software front, the INGLO platform employs a centralised computing network with three machines handling all duties. It has an inbuilt 5G network that continuously upgrades the vehicle with over-the-air updates. The microprocessors are the most recent generation of spacecraft, with 200K DMIPS computational capability via a Dual Octa-core CPU that combines with the high-resolution display.

Mahindra BE.09

Mahindra may have been a little late to the electric vehicle party, but the business has pulled out all the stops for its grand entrance. With five electric SUVs and two sub-brands, Mahindra will be a formidable competitor to India’s present and prospective electric automobiles. Mahindra anticipates that electric vehicles will account for one-quarter of total sales by 2027.
