New Delhi: The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a coalition of more than 40 farmers’ unions, said on Thursday that farmers in Punjab had no “concrete information” that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy would pass through the bridge where they were protesting.
He also said farmers made no effort to move towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy when it was stranded on the airlift due to the blockade.
“Upon receiving the news of Prime Minister Modi’s proposed visit to Punjab on January 5, 10 farmers’ organizations affiliated with Samyukta Kisan Morcha announced a symbolic protest against the arrest (of Union Minister) Ajay Mishra Teni and other pending requests, ”SKM said.
“Some farmers were arrested by the police on their way to the Ferozepur district headquarters. They protested by sitting on the road in many places. the convoy was going to pass, ”the group said.
The SKM further said that the allegation of threat to the prime minister’s life was “completely concocted”.
“It is clear from the video of the occasion that the protesting farmers made no effort to even walk towards the PM’s convoy. Only a group with BJP flags waving the slogan ‘Narendra Modi Zindabad’ s’ was approached from this convoy. Therefore, a threat to PM’s life seems completely concocted, “SKM said.
Prime Minister Modi’s convoy was blocked on an overflight during a “major security breach” on Wednesday due to a blockade by protesters in Ferozepur. Prime Minister Modi had to return from Punjab, linked to the poll, without attending any event, including a rally.
The incident sparked a major political row just weeks before the Punjab elections, with the BJP claiming that the ruling Congress in the state had “attempted to physically injure” the prime minister.
The Chief Minister of Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi, claimed that Narendra Modi’s “life-threatening gimmick” was aimed at “overthrowing a democratically elected government” in the state. Congress claimed Modi had canceled his trip due to small crowds at the venue.
The Center formed a three-member committee to investigate “serious shortcomings” in security arrangements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. The Punjabi government also set up a commission on Wednesday to investigate the incident.
