Dilip Joshi himself shared this anecdote in an interview. He had said that Asit Modi had earlier told him about the character of Bapuji, i.e. Champaklal Gada. When Dilip Joshi learned of the existence of this character, he told Asit Modi about it, he had believed that he was perhaps not cut out for it.

After which there was talk about the Jethalal character and then Dilip Joshi was also in doubt. But at the request of Asit Modi, he agreed to play this character and he agreed to become Jethalal.
