DGCA may decide on Boeing 737 Max aircraft worthiness in 2-3 months

The Indian airline’s controller is considering whether the Boeing 737 Max aircraft – which had landed around the world in 2019 after two crashes – will be allowed to fly again in the country and will take two to three months to decide, a senior official said.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation conducts pilot training, pilot testing and software testing of Boeing 737 Max aircraft, the official said.
“We have received requests from three organizations for the progress of restoring the Boeing 737 Max aircraft and we are in the process of testing it before allowing the aircraft to operate,” the official said.

Air traffic controllers in the US and Europe have already approved the flight to be repaired.

The US Federal Aviation Administration’s pilot readiness guide for 737 Max pilots requires the installation of new flight control software, a flight manual that includes new and updated flight attendant procedures, the installation of new software for the Max show and flight operations program, and others.
The DGCA allowed Boeing 737 Max planes to fly to the Indian airspace in April and also said that registered foreign airlines could be deported. However, the airline watchdog has not lifted the flight ban in India since March 2019.

DGCA has banned Boeing 737 Max aircraft from operating in India after a Lion Air Max plane crashed in October 2018 and one Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed near Addis Ababa in March 2019, killing 157 people, including four Indians.

In India, SpiceJet and Jet Airways used Boeing Max flights before the ban. SpiceJet has 13 Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft in its vehicles and placed orders for another 142 aircraft, their delivery was suspended.
SpiceJet has so far demanded compensation of Rs 1,232.25 crore from Boeing on the basis of 737 Max flights. However, if the airline ban is lifted, SpiceJet and Boeing could renegotiate the agreement, market experts say.
“If the Boeing 737 Max is allowed to operate in India again, SpiceJet will participate in its negotiations with Boeing to resume the delivery of the new 737 Max aircraft,” said aviation and defense market expert.

As Jet Airways seeks to return to the Indian subcontinent following the completion of its crash, the airline has begun talks with Boeing about the purchase of aircraft, according to media reports.

Akasa, a new aircraft planned to be funded by investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, is said to be in talks with Boeing to buy about 100 737 Max aircraft, according to media reports.
