Mumbai / New Delhi: Cyclone Tauktae, which has hit the coast of Gujarat on Monday night, has affected thousands in six provinces – Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Goa – since we started off in the Arabian Sea last week before it finally weakened overnight. Major rescue operations were under way, and thousands were evacuated along the west coast.
The powerful video – depicting the rescue of two people on a life raft – shows how challenging it was to perform these tasks between strong winds and severe weather. The visuals show INS Kolkata carrying out this work.

INS Kolkata “rescued two survivors from Vara Prabha,” and joined the INS Kochi SAR (search and rescue) Barge P305 personnel, “said a Navy official.

Of the 273 aboard, the Barge ” P305 ” was one of two boats off the coast of Mumbai on Monday afternoon, hours before the storm hit the Gujarat coast. One was the GAL Constructor with 137 passengers.

To date, 177 people have been rescued as part of the Barge 305 ops ops. The Indian Navy shared updates on Twitter and posted visuals, stressing that rescue operations were being carried out “in extreme weather and in a very rough sea”.

The cyclone made landfall in Gujarat at around 8:30 PM on Monday as an “extremely severe cyclonic storm”, packing gusts of up to 185 kilometres per hour. By morning, it had weakened to a “very severe cyclonic storm”.

Tauktae is the first cyclone in India this year amid a battle against a deadly second wave of Covid, which has put tremendous pressure on the country’s hospitals.

Several people have lost lives as the cyclone crossed Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat in the last few days.
