As the national capital continues to report an increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths in addition to the lack of oxygen cylinders, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has asked its hostel-based students to leave their rooms and go to their hometown.
JMI in the notice said the decision was taken after the postponement of the planned UPSC discussion, on the recommendation of the Jamia Corona Steering Committee. The committee also looked at other COVID-19 cases found among students of the Residential Coaching Academy (RCA), JMI’s free training center for a few UPSC community students.
JMI’s Vice-Chancellor has approved the closure of all RCA educational activities and its hostels reserved for boys and girls as soon as possible until further notice. “This is done for the good of the health and safety of the students, and to avoid the fear of the spread of the disease,” the statement said.
The Vice-Chancellor also directed that RCA students living in JMI hostels should leave their hostels immediately as the RCA would not be able to provide adequate medical assistance in the event of a medical emergency, the notice said.
“Students’ safety should be extended to their homeland and they will be able to live with their families under secure security, as Delhi hospitals are facing severe Oxygen shortages and appropriate treatment,” he added. The infection caused by coronavirus has increased in the national capital for a week due to a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in the city.
Last week, CM Kejriwal of Delhi announced a full week-long ‘closure’ from April 19, 10 pm to April 26 at 5 p.m. This has now been extended to May 3. The number of new COVID-19 cases and 350 related deaths was reported in Delhi 24 hours ago, according to a Delhi government health report on Sunday evening. The city now has 94,592 active cases. The number of coronavirus cases in the city has risen to 10,27,715 and the death toll has risen to 14,248.
