New Delhi: In another milestone in India’s vaccination feat, a locally developed vaccine against the coronavirus – Covaxin – has now been recognized “around the world” as a “universal vaccine for adults and children”.
“COVAXIN is now a universal vaccine for adults and children. Our goals of developing a global vaccine against COVID-19 have been met and all product development for approval has been completed, ”ANI news agency quoted Bharat Biotech in a statement.
The Hyderabad-based vaccine maker also said its goal of developing a global vaccine against Covid-19 had been met.
The development comes hours after Bharat Biotech applied to the Comptroller General of Medicines of India (DCGI) for regular market approval for Covaxin. The vaccine is currently only licensed for emergency use in the country.
The company has submitted detailed information regarding chemistry, manufacturing, and controls, as well as preclinical and clinical data with the drug regulator while seeking regular marketing authorization for Covaxin.
However, the PTI news agency reported that the pharmaceutical giant has yet to submit full follow-up data from the clinical trial of Covaxin to the DCGI.
Meanwhile, 12% of the total Covid-19 vaccines given in the country so far include Covaxin and it is the only vaccine given to young people aged 15 to 18.
