Congress and SP criticize BJP for placing party flag over tricolor at Kalyan Singh prayer meeting

The Opposition expressed its ire as a photograph, tweeted by the BJP, shows Kalyan Singh’s body draped by the national flag but half of it was seen to be covered up by the saffron party’s own flag.

New Delhi: The opposition criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday for placing its party flag on the tricolor while paying tribute to the mortal remains of the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Kalyan Singh, in Lucknow.

“Is it okay to place the party flag over the Indian flag in New India?” Head of Youth Congress Srinivas BV tweeted.

BJP flag on top of tricolor! Are self-proclaimed patriots respecting or insulting the tricolor???” the Youth Congress tweeted in Hindi from its official handle.

Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ghanshyam Tiwari also criticized the BJP on the issue.

“Party above the Nation. The flag above the Tricolor. BJP as usual: no regret, no repentance, no sorrow, no grief,” he tweeted.

The opposition expressed their anger as a photograph, tweeted by the BJP, shows Kalyan Singh’s body lying in a state draped by the national flag, but half of it was seen covered by the saffron party flag.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader J.P. Nadda paid their final respects to Kalyan Singh in Lucknow.

Singh, who had been in pain for some time, breathed his last at the age of 89 at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow on Saturday evening.

He was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) earlier on July 4 due to an infection and a reduced level of consciousness.

He died of sepsis and multiple organ failure, the hospital said in a statement.

Uttar Pradesh announced a three-day mourning and public holiday on Monday when the former chief minister’s last rites will be celebrated.
