Burkina Faso: 41 killed including volunteer leader

Burkina Faso News: Islamist extremists killed 41 people in an attack in northern Burkina Faso last week, including prominent leaders of a voluntary organization helping the country’s military.

The government gave that information. Government spokesman Alkasoum Maiga decreed two days of mourning following a horrific attack on a convoy in Loroum province on Thursday.

The victims included Soumaila Ganam, also known as Ladji Yoro. Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Cabore said Ganam died for his country and “he will certainly be a symbol of our unwavering commitment to fight the enemy”.

Rapid increase in incidents of violence

The death of the leader of Burkina Faso’s largest voluntary organization has created a sense of panic, said Heni Nasaibia, senior researcher at the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project. Violence in Burkina Faso, once a peaceful country in West Africa, is on the rise as attacks linked to al Qaeda and the Islamic State have escalated.

The government faced opposition to step down

In other words, in November more than 50 lingams were killed in the attack on the country’s security forces, while in June at least 60 people in the Sohal region were massacred. The government faced opposition to resign amid its failure to stop violence following the November attacks.
