After firing 900 employees with Zoom calls, Better.com chief executive Vishal Garg is taking a leave of absence from the company while conducting a “leadership and cultural research.”
Employees were notified of Garg’s leave by email by the board. In his absence, CFO Kevin Ryan will take care of the digital mortgage company.
Garg has received a call online after his video of shooting 900 people with a Zoom phone went viral online. Garg, however, quickly issued an apology for his handling of the demolition.
“Vishal and the Board wanted to provide the best staff with a review of the most tragic incidents last week. Vishal will take time off to work immediately.
During this interim period, Kevin Ryan as CFO will be in charge of the company’s day-to-day decisions and will report to the Board, ”the Board wrote in an email to staff informing them of Garg’s leave.
The company also revealed that the board now relies on a third-party private company to conduct leadership and cultural research, reports Motherboard.
better.com, founded in 2012, has been under the spotlight since Garg’s video of shooting 900 people unfairly spread. “If you’re on the phone, you’re part of an unfortunate team that is being demolished,” Garg said in a widespread Zoom video. The video was recorded by company employees and was later streamed online.
Shortly after the video caught everyone’s attention, Garg sent a letter of apology to better.com employees. “I have failed to show proper respect and appreciation for the people affected, and their contributions to Better.
I can see that the way I spoke to the news made the situation worse, ”he wrote. Garg reportedly in the video said he had not started firing people, reportedly having done so before.
He said that when he last announced he would be laid off, he cried. Infected video has now been downloaded online.
It was also reported that the top three employees of Better.com resigned after Garg’s handling of the layoffs. Employees said the CEO had failed to show proper respect to the retrenched people and their contributions to the company had not been appreciated by the CEO.
