On the night of August 19, 2020, a gang had robbed the house of Ashok Kumar, uncle of cricketer Suresh Raina, resident of Madhopur Thariyal police station Shahpur Kandi in Pathankot.
In a major breakthrough in the case involving a horrific attack on the family of former Indian team cricketer Suresh Raina, Punjab police arrested Chhajju alia Chhaimar de Baheri on Sunday in an attack against relatives of Raina during which her uncle and a cousin were killed.
Punjab police, as part of a joint operation with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF), arrested Chhajju from Pachpedha village under the Baheri police station.
The accused confessed to having committed theft and murder. On the night of August 19, 2020, a gang robbed the home of Ashok Kumar, uncle of cricketer Suresh Raina, resident of Madhopur Thariyal Shahpur Kandi police station in Pathankot.
Last year, Punjab’s Chief Minister Amarinder Singh announced that three members of an interstate thief-criminal gang had been arrested, more than two weeks after Raina took to Twitter to confirm his relatives in Punjab had been attacked and his uncle had been shot dead.
“What happened to my family was that Punjab was more than horrible. My uncle was shot to death, my bua and my two cousins were seriously injured. Unfortunately, my cousin also died there. last night after fighting for life for days. My bua is still very very critical and is on life support, “Raina wrote.
“Till date, we don’t know what exactly had happened that night & who did this. I request @PunjabPoliceInd to look into this matter. We at least deserve to know who did this heinous act to them. Those criminals should not be spared to commit more crimes. @capt_amarinder @CMOPb”
Suresh Raina’s uncle Ashok Kumar, a contractor, had died on the spot, while Kumar’s son, Kaushal, succumbed to injuries on August 31. Chhajju told police he fled to Hyderabad after the incident, stayed there for some time, and then returned to his village in Bareilly.
