Amazon apologizes to U.S. Attorney Mark Pocan for drivers urinating in bottles

Amazon.com Inc has apologized to US Ambassador Mark Pocan, who admitted to scoring “his own goal” in his first opposition to his proposal that its drivers were sometimes forced to urinate on bottles during their delivery.

“We know that drivers can and do have difficulty finding toilets due to traffic or sometimes rural routes, and this has been the case especially during the Covid era when many public toilets have been closed,” the company said on a blog post.
Its adoption came a week after Democrat criticized Amazon’s working conditions, saying in a tweet: “Paying workers $ 15 / hr doesn’t make you a ‘continuous workplace’ where the union – and makes workers urinate with water bottles.”

Amazon initially issued a denial, saying in a tweet: “You don’t really believe that urination on bottlenecks, does it? If that were true, no one would work for us.” But take those words back.
That was our intention, we are not happy about it, and we have to apologize to the Pocan Ambassador, “Amazon said in a post, adding that his previous response was directed at workers in its factories or facilities.

The company said the issue was widespread in the industry and would look for solutions, without specifying what these could be.

Amazon’s apology comes at a time when Alabama warehouse workers are waiting for a vote count that could lead to the United States ’first union center in the United States and mark a deadline for organized workers.

Amazon has long been frustrating efforts among its more than 800,000 US employees to organize it. Allegations by many workers about a stressful or unsafe workplace have turned the union into a corporation into a major US trade union goal.
