Advocacy in SC calls for postponement of NEET-PG, 2022 scheduled for March 12

A plea was filed on Tuesday in the Supreme Court seeking postponement of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) scheduled on March 12 for admissions in post graduate medical courses, claiming that many MBBS graduates would not be able to take up the examination due to non-completion of mandatory internship period.

A plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking the postponement of the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) scheduled for March 12 for admissions to postgraduate medical courses, saying many MBBS graduates do not could not pass the exam. due to the non-fulfilment of the mandatory internship period.

Plea filed by six MBBS graduates, through Dubey Law Chambers, asks the National Examinations Council to postpone the scheduled test until various requirements, such as the completion of the mandatory probationary period, set out in the PG Regulations, are met by many aspirants.

One of the NEET PG regulations stated that 30 beds of a hospital should be allocated to a unit of students pursuing the PG course and now two students from two academic sessions will have to be housed in the same institution.

The petition raises a challenge to the violation of the NEET PG Regulations, 2000, while admitting applicants to academic sessions in a single session as there is an “explicit cap on the number of PG admissions to be made per year per unit” , a lawyer for the company said.

Several hundred MBBS graduates, whose internship was interrupted due to their duty to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, would be rendered ineligible to participate in the NEET-PG test due to the absence of mandatory internship duty as well. through no fault of their own, the plea said while seeking a postponement of the ordeal.

He referred to the statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 3 last year to postpone NEET-PG 2021 for at least four months and that the services of senior MBBS doctors will be used to treat mild cases of Covid.

The plea contests the condition provided for in the information bulletin which provides for a deadline of May 31, 2022 for the completion of the internship.

“The petitioners (with 1500 applicants) mentioned that they were in Covid duties in 2021 and therefore their internship was postponed. They argued that they are victims of the circumstances and that they were not informed at any time that serving in Covid duties would amount to a situation where they would not be eligible to appear for the NEET-PG,” the attorney said.

The plea requested an extension of the deadline for completing the internship from May 31.

Recently, the Supreme Court on January 7 cleared the way for the start of the stalled NEET-PG 2021 advisory process based on the existing reservations of 27% OBC and 10% EWS in the All India Quota seats, saying that it there is an “urgent need” to begin the admissions process.
